Welcome to the new series of Posts from Your Archives 2023 where I will be sharing posts from the last six months of 2022 I have selected from the archives of willing participants. If you wish to be included the information is at the the end of the post.
Author Darlene Foster shares some wonderful black and white photographs of her family from the 1950s.
My blogging friend, Beetley Pete, has been running a series of posts featuring photographs from post-war Britain. They are fascinating, a great look back at another time and another place. I would suggest you check them out here. .
Memories in Photographs by Darlene Foster
I love old photographs and am so pleased that my family is a family of picture takers. Over the years I have accumulated some wonderful old pictures from the Canadian prairies. So I thought I would post a few of them from time to time as others may enjoy them too. Many will be of family and some will be poor quality. The following are from the 1950s.
This four-generation picture is one of my favourites. Seated is my great-grandmother, and on the left is my grandmother holding little me (and teddy). My mom is on the right. These three women were a huge influence in my life. The shadow of my dad taking the picture makes it even more special.
Another favourite with special women in my life. From left to right, my aunt with my cousin, Mom holding my little brother, me (with teddy), my paternal grandmother, a close family friend I called Aunty and her two children (who I’m still friends with).
Now here is one I just love. I am on the right with my aunt and my brother. We were playing wedding and needed a bridesmaid so we put a dress on my younger brother. He looks so happy because we actually let him play with us. We look a bit guilty, I think. He is not fond of this picture but has forgiven us. I think he looks so cute!
Two farm kids from the 1950s at Hilda, Alberta. One now lives in Thailand, the other in Spain. Who would have thought?
Here I am on the farm with my brother and a snowman we had just built; our dog lurking in the background.
My next little brother with my mom’s teenage sisters, my dear aunts. Another favourite picture.
Thanks for joining me on my trip down memory lane.
Do you enjoy looking at old pictures?

My thanks to Darlene for letting me delve into her archives and I know she would love to hear from you.
About Darlene Foster
Growing up on a ranch near Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, Darlene Foster dreamt of writing, traveling the world, and meeting interesting people. She also believed in making her dreams come true. It’s no surprise she’s now the award-winning author of Amanda Travels, a children’s adventure series featuring a spunky twelve-year-old who loves to travel to unique places. Readers of all ages enjoy following Amanda as she unravels one mystery after another. When not traveling herself, Darlene divides her time between the west coast of Canada and the Costa Blanca, Spain with her husband and entertaining rescue dogs, Dot and Lia.

One of the reviews for Amanda in France
After reading this book, I feel like I’ve visited Paris. The sights were amazing, the locals were kind, and the history was interesting.
Amanda in France is a mystery story. Why does the man with the ponytail show up everywhere, and what’s that person in the black jacket doing in the shadows? Who are the bad guys, and why do the police want Amanda’s friend’s phone? Foster sneaks in plenty of red herrings. I admit it took me awhile to figure out what was happening.
Amanda is brave in the face of very real dangers, and Foster brings up an important discussion point: Should we continue to travel when gangs and terrorists may spoil visits to amazing places? Amanda is only 12 years old, but she and her Aunt Jenny are wise on that issue. (I won’t spoil it and reveal what they say.)
Great fun, and I learned a lot about Paris!
How to feature in the series?
- All I need you to do is give me permission to dive in to your archives and find two posts to share here on Smorgasbord. (sally.cronin@moyhill.com)
- Rather than a set topic, I will select posts at random of general interest across a number of subjects from the second six months of 2022. (it is helpful if you have a link to your archives in your sidebar by month)
- As I will be promoting your books as part of the post along with all your information and links so I will not be sharing direct marketing or self- promotional posts in the series.
- If you are an author I am sure you will have a page on your blog with the details, and an ‘about page’ with your profile and social media links (always a good idea anyway). I will get everything that I need.
- As a blogger I would assume that you have an ‘about page’ a profile photo and your links to social media.
- Copyright is yours and I will ©Your name on every post… and you will be named as the author in the URL and subject line.
- Previous participants are very welcome to take part again.
- Each post is reformatted for my blog and I don’t cut and paste, this means it might look different from your own post especially if you are using the block editor.
N.B – To get the maximum benefit from your archive posts, the only thing I ask is that you respond to comments individually and share on your own social media.. thank you.
Many thanks for the mention, dear Sally.
Best wishes, Pete. x

I’m a great picture taker too.
we each (5 of us) had our own photo album of our childhood.
Glad to see teddy features too and yes i have a few embarassing photos of my little brother too. (Youngest and only boy of 5)
He loved playing bin man (hiding our toys behind the settee – dumping them) and playing in the bath. LOL

I love going through old photographs through the years they are a reminder of all the good times as you seldom take photos of the sad.. They are there but so much to treasure. ♥

I’ve put some of my more recent photos of my grandson in a photobook which we sometime look at and read the photos to make up our own stories.
these days people don’t often print as many off, which is a shame. My phone is full of photos and videos to clear.

I love the physical albums that we still have and they can be lingered over and talked about. ♥

Teddy went everywhere with me. (I still have him too) Thanks, Sue. Pictures do evoke all kinds of memories.

Yes, people don’t tend to print them off these days, which is a shame.
my mum is currently looking through her old history photos and is enjoying adding them to relevant groups on Facebook. (As well as key albums. She is 94, with a whole lot of memories from her parents, her older sisters and her family history – it certainly keeps her going)

That is wonderful, Sue, that your mom is sharing old photos on Facebook. Amazing that others can see them now too. It is a shame that many don’t print the photos anymore. I worry they will be lost for other generations to enjoy.

Sometimes it is good to be a packrat. Our family is great at saving old photos and as the older folks leave us, the photos are passed down. Never thrown out.

I think I missed this one the first time around, Sally, so thanks for sharing it. I love old photos too. The one of your brother in a dress, Darlene, cracked me up. I used to dress up my little brothers for fashion shows to my dad’s distress. Lol. Thanks for the fun and for stirring up that memory. 🙂 ❤
