My review today is for the contemporary novel A Rather Unusual Romance by Stevie Turner.

About the book

Erin Mason, divorced and with two teenage sons, finds her world begins to fall apart when she undergoes what is termed a “life event”, and is diagnosed with cancer. Not too far away somebody else, Alan Beaumont, is also suffering a similar fate. Their paths slowly come together in this inspiring and humorous tale which is partly based on actual events, and shows how love can flourish in the most unlikely of circumstances.

My review for the book November 6th 2023

At first glance you would assume that the subject matter of this novel would be depressing but that is far from the truth.

The author manages to infuse humour into the lives, the devastating diagnosis and the family situations from the first page to the last. At the same time, writing from experience, Stevie Turner also offers a realistic behind the scenes look at this particular cancer and its treatment.

Both Erin and Alan have baggage, a sense of ‘what now’ following failed relationships and family dramas still playing out as they come to terms with not just the diagnosis, but the uncertainty for the future. Both are surprised when seemingly fate intervenes and throws them together. Despite their wariness with regard to love, they find an unexpected connection that changes their perspective of who they are.

This is a love story and a wonderful romance that I thoroughly enjoyed. It serves to remind us not to give up hope and live life to the full every chance you get. Recommended

Stevie Turner is a British author of romantic suspense, humour, paranormal stories, and women’s fiction family dramas. She is a cancer survivor, and still lives in the same picturesque Suffolk village that she and husband Sam moved to in 1991 with their two boys. Those two boys have now grown, and she and Sam have 5 lovely grandchildren.

Stevie’s latest book, ‘His Ladyship,’ reached the finals and Longlist of the 2021 Page Turner Writing Award.
