Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Music Column – The Breakfast Show with William Price King and Sally Cronin – Chart Hits 1982 Part One – The Alan Parsons Project, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder, Survivor, Steve Miller Band

Each week William and I select two top hits from the charts in the US and UK starting with 1960 for two weeks followed by 1961 etc..through to 1985. We will also include some of the notable events in those years for the up and coming stars who were centre stage at the time. We are now in the 1980s.

Welcome to our show and we are excited to share decades of music with you in 2021. Here is my first selection of top 1982 hits which I hope you will enjoy.

News Event: January 25th 9th American Music Awards: Pat Benatar & Kenny Rogers win

The Alan Parsons Project – Eye in the sky

“Eye in the sky,” from the album of the same name, peaked at #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and climbed to #1 in Canada and Spain while becoming a top 40 hit around the globe. The album “Eye in the Sky” was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Engineered Album in 1983. In 2019 Parsons released a version of this song in Catalan entitled “Seré els teus ulls al camí” (I’ll be your eyes on the road), and won the Grammy Award for “Best Immersive Audio Album.”

News Event: February 13th Pink Floyd’s album “Dark Side of the Moon” marks 402 weeks in the album charts

Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder

“Ebony and Ivory,” from Paul McCartney’s album “Tug of War,” aligns the black and white keys of a piano keyboard with the theme of racial harmony. The single topped the charts in both the US and the UK, spending seven weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and was ranked as the 69th biggest selling single of all time. The song was banned in South Africa, during the apartheid era, after Stevie Wonder dedicated his 1984 Academy Award for Best Original Song to Nelson Mandela.

News Event: March 26th Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder release the single “Ebony & Ivory” in the UK

Now time for my first picks from 1982 and I hope you will enjoy my selection.

Survivor – Eye of the Tiger

“Eye of the Tiger” is a song by American rock band Survivor. It was released as a single from their third album of the same name and was also the theme song for the 1982 film Rocky III, which was released a day before the single. The song was written by Survivor guitarist Frankie Sullivan and keyboardist Jim Peterik, and it was recorded at the request of Rocky III star, writer, and director Sylvester Stallone, after Queen denied him permission to use “Another One Bites the Dust”, the song Stallone intended as the Rocky III theme. Steve Miller Band – Abracadabra

“Abracadabra” is a song by American rock group Steve Miller Band, written by Steve Miller. The song was released as the first single from the 1982 album of the same name the same year. The song is said to have been inspired by the American singer Diana Ross, whom Miller had met when they each performed on the same episode of the pop music television show Hullabaloo in the 1960s. Your Hosts for The Breakfast Show

William Price King is an American jazz singer, crooner, and composer.

His interest in music began at an early age when he studied piano and clarinet in high school. At Morehouse College in Atlanta where he grew up, he sang in the Glee Club and studied classical music. After graduation he went off to the Yale School of Music where he earned a Masters degree. From there he journeyed to New York where he created a jazz trio ‘Au Naturel’ which performed in some of the hottest venues in Manhattan including gigs on Broadway and the famous ‘Rainbow Room.’ These gigs opened doors for performances in Montreal and a European tour.

While touring Europe he met a lovely French lady, Jeanne Maïstre, who, a year later became his wife. King left the group ‘Au Naturel’ and settled in the south of France where he started a new life on the French Riviera, opening his own music school – the “Price King Ecole Internationale de Chant.” He has had the pleasure over the years of seeing many of his students excel as singers on a professional level, and some going on to become national celebrities. He continues to coach young singers today, in his spare time.

  1. Another fab collection William and Sally. Dare I mention Survivor? We shared a record label and producer/engineer a few times. That is why we got to hear the raw unmixed and unmastered recordings of Eye of the Tiger., in the studio whilst recording there. Jimi had a cold whilst recording but sang brilliantly and they took the first take for the record. Hubby and I had the dubious honour, (LOL) of sleeping in his bed too – we won’t go into detail but it was clean and we had it to ourselves. Fab vocalist. Nice guy, sadly he passed away 2014, way too young.

  2. Loved the background history of Abracadabra (of which now that tune is stuck in my head), lol. Seems Ebony and Ivory could use some new round of playing on the airwaves. I never knew Stevie Wonder dedicated his award to Nelson Mandela, and so not surprised SA banned the song for that given the times. Sad indeed. But great music show Will and Sal. ❤

  3. I liked the last two best this week. Survivor were cheesy but a lot of fun, and the Steve Miller Band were always good value. Given that they were a British band it surprises me how little success the Alan Parsons Project had here – this one didn’t even make our chart!

  4. Thanks for these, Sally and William. I do so enjoy going back in time with your selections and learning more about them. I had totally forgotten the Alan Parsons Project, which is funny since my maiden name was Parsons.

  5. Eye of the Tiger (which makes you belt out the refrain!) and Ebony and Ivory where I’ve noticed for the first time that their clothing are opposites, the other two had sailed under my radar. Many thanks for these. I enjoyed them all. x

  6. Another great four tracks to listen to and to watch.
I love some seeing the videos too.
The Rocky films are/were my sons all time favourites.
Thank you for my Tuesday morning start

  7. I’m happy to see the Alan Parsons Project getting some love. They are often overlooked, and I think one of the best bands of their era with a very distinctive sound.

  8. All great selections! My husband and I saw the Steve Miller Band (many years after this song came out) and this was their encore song. I love when I can sing along with your selections and all four were belted out here (glad I live alone 🤣)
