In this series you are invited to share an extract of 500 words from your most recent book published within the last 12 months. Details at the end of the post.
The aim of the series
- To showcase your latest book and sell some more copies.
- Gain more reviews for the book.
- Promote a selection of your other books that are available.
The first author to feature in this new series is Jan Sikes with an extract from her latest release, a military romance, Jagged Feathers (The White Rune Series Book 2)
About the book
Vann Noble did his duty. He served his country and returned a shell of a man, wounded inside and out. With a missing limb and battling PTSD, he seeks healing in an isolated cabin outside a small Texas town with a stray dog that sees beyond his master’s scars. If only the white rune’s magic can bring a happily ever after to a man as broken as Vann.
On the run from hired killers and struggling to make sense of her unexplained deadly mission, Nakina Bird seeks refuge in Vann’s cabin. She has secrets. Secrets that can get them all killed.
A ticking clock and long odds of living or dying, create jarring risks.
Will these two not only survive but find unexpected love along the way? Or, will evil forces win and destroy them both?
An extract from the book
Creating art with pieces of wood he picked up along the creek bank brought Vann peace.
The simple action of carving scenes and shapes into nature’s leavings temporarily replaced the incessant noise in his head.
Many of the scenes he carved told stories. Memories from his boyhood, fishing along the banks of the James River without a care in the world, exploring the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and observing the birds and wildlife that inhabited that area of Virginia came to life beneath his fingers and tools.
This cabin on Wolf Creek came close to recreating the tranquility he loved that could only be found in nature.
If his best friend, Sam Jett, hadn’t entrusted him to deliver his final letter to Rena, Sam’s sister in Texas, he might have returned home to Virginia. But to be honest, the idea of facing his family and friends with parts of his body and soul missing frightened him.
He found solace and hope for healing in Texas. And now, with a beautiful woman in need of his help, he was happier than ever that he’d stayed.
Not that he had anything to offer her, except his help. While he found her irresistibly attractive, he was sure she’d never be able to look past his scars to see the man he used to be.
He blew out a long sigh, and Champion whined.
“I’m okay, boy. Just thinkin’.”
For the first time since the bombing, he allowed his thoughts to drift to what-ifs. He hadn’t even considered what it would be like to make love. How could any woman stand to look at him with part of his body missing?
It had been so long since he’d enjoyed the touch of a soft hand. The last time was on leave in Ireland. What a beautiful girl she’d been.
He shook his head as if to clear it and switched on the radio. He needed something to fill his mind besides these crazy meanderings.
When his coffee cup was empty, he got to his feet and stretched. Champion mimicked him, and Vann scratched behind his ear.
“Let’s go check on our patient.”
Champion barked.
He switched off the radio, and they crossed the short distance between the workshop and the cabin.
Champion suddenly stopped, and his tail went up. A growl left his throat.
Vann scanned the property.
“What is it, boy?”
Champion didn’t move.
He reached for the Glock before realizing he’d left it in the cabin. He made a mental note not to make that mistake again.
Then he heard it. No one ever randomly came down the gravel road that led to his cabin, but the unmistakable crunch of tires sounded in the distance.
“Come on, Champion.”
He sprinted to the back door. Once inside, he grabbed the pistol and watched through the front window.
A rusted old Camaro, missing half of its front bumper, came into view.
My review for the book March 3rd 2022
Having read book one of this series I was looking forward to this next story with much anticipation. I was delighted to catch up with some of the characters from Ghostly Interference and the author made the transition seamless.
Both Vann and Nankina who head the cast in this second book, carry the burden of past events in their lives and the story highlights the many challenges facing those who have served and also civilians who have been touched by tragedy.
The setting is tanquil, but danger and violence intrude into this peaceful backwater. The last thing a recovering soldier with PTSD needs is to be back in a war zone, but his need to protect a defenceless woman becomes a mission he cannot back down from.
This is a high octane thriller and romance, with some intriguing paranormal elements which draws the reader in, and sweeps them along with the action and developing love affair. And then there is also an adorable dog who despite his own past mistreatment gives love in abundance.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and recommend to those who enjoy action packed romances.

About Jan Sikes
I’ve been an avid reader all my life. I can still remember the excitement that surged through me the first time I realized I could decipher words. Many summers, I won the highest award possible from the Hobbs, NM Public Library for reading the most books.
There’s nothing I love more than losing myself in a story.
Oddly enough, I never had any ambition to be a writer. But I wound up in mid-life with a story that begged to be told. Not just any story, but a true story that rivaled any fiction creation. Through fictitious characters, the tale came to life in an intricately woven tale that encompasses four books. Not satisfied to stop with the books, I released music CDs of original music to match the time period of each story segment.
In conclusion, to bring the story full circle, I published a book of poetry and art. I was done.
Wrong!
The story ideas keep coming, and I don’t intend to turn off the creative fountain.
I am a member of the Author’s Marketing Guild, The Writer’s League of Texas, Romance Writers of America, and the Paranormal Writer’s Guild. I am an avid fan of Texas music and grandmother of five beautiful souls. I reside in North Texas.
Thank you for dropping in today and I hope you will be leaving with some books.. Sally

-
-
- I will top and tail in the usual way with your other books and links, bio, photo and social media.
- I will also select a review from Amazon or Goodreads that I feel has the best selling pitch for the book.
- If your book is very recent and as yet has not received a review then I will share one from a previous book.
- This series is open to all authors both those on the Bookshelf or new to the blog
- I suggest an extract of approximately 500 words or a poem that you feel best reflects the theme of your collection.
- If you have an illustration or images you can attach to the email for me to include. No need to send the cover as I will have that or will access from Amazon.
- If you have not featured on the blog before then I will need Amazon link, Goodreads, blog or website plus your social media links (main three you use)
- Please send your extract and any accompanying images to sally.cronin@moyhill.com

Good morning, Sally and all.
So far this week has begun well. Last week is now quite a blur, what with surgery, Prince Edward’s passing and focusing on my recovery.
However, this week begins with spring time weather, good books and I’m up at my desk with coffee and computer.
PS. Am I correct in understanding the rules for this promotional opportunity to state that this is for books published within the last 12 months only?

Hi Patty.. sorry you had such a dreadful week but as you say spring weather does make a difference. This current promotion is just for books published in the last 12 months.. I will do another later in the year for previous books…hugsxx
