Smorgasbord Posts from Your Archives 2023 #Potluck – The Grass is not Always Greener – #Tech Woes – From #Rogers to #BellCanada and Back by D.G. Kaye

Welcome to the new series of Posts from Your Archives 2023 where I will be sharing posts from the last six months of 2022 I have selected from the archives of willing participants. If you wish to be included the information is at the the end of the post.

In September last year Debby Gies and many parts of Canada suffered a catastrophic online outage and this resulted in customers returning or attempting to return to the original supplier of their services… but as Debby points out the grass is not always greener.

The Grass is not Always Greener – #Tech Woes – From #Rogers to #BellCanada and Back  by D. G. Kaye

I think this may be a rant. But after the day I had Monday with more technical madness in the midst of mad mercury retrograde, I should have known better than to book such a major move-over in this phase of madness.

After all the problems I’ve had with Rogers, I’d been promising myself to move over to Bell. After spending a few hours with a Bell rep, they finally put together a satisfactory package for me for all my services. The install date was this past Monday.

An installer, minus a personality, showed up. He had little interest in my questions and made an electrical room out of my kitchen without explanation, didn’t make a new box in a more appropriate area to put the wifi and the rest of the wiring mess, set up TVs that didn’t have my programs I ordered and no idea where to even look with over 1500 channels, told me ‘they’re there’, didn’t test my landline, finally just walked out without saying he was leaving, and no info, contract number, anything. By this time, he’d been there 4 hours – minus the 2 hours he disappeared somewhere.

I then proceeded to call Bell and tell them how horrid my experience was, no TV working, and they asked if my ‘new’ phone number was working? What?????????? I didn’t order a new phone number, they were supposed to port over the old number – again, terrible service. I was screaming at this point telling them I want their shit out of my home and I’m going back to Rogers, and then after 2 hours with nonsensical people who clearly don’t know their jobs. I hung up on someone.

I immediately dialed Rogers. I had to make sure they didn’t put through the cancel order, and they gratefully, hadn’t yet. I rehooked up my Roger’s equipment – TV, Wifi, landline and told them my grief, adding that I’d already added the Bell Sim card to my mobile, but I wanted to come back to Rogers if they could match the Bell price I got. They matched it minus 5 more dollars, plus more gigs and unlimited data and are sending me a new Rogers Sim card tomorrow.

I think I lost some (more) hair over this event that finally finished after 11pm. I missed lunch and dinner, took a Valium, and finally passed out reading. Needless to say, I will put up with the outages more than I can put up with incompetent people. In fact, I noticed, my last Roger’s Bill was $50 cheaper than the regular bill. Turns out that was a credit for the July outage debacle. As my husband would say, “It’s better than getting kicked in the ass with a frozen boot.”

My thanks to Debby for letting me delve into her archives and I know she would love to hear from you especially if you too have some tech woes to share.

About D.G. Kaye (Debby Gies)

D.G. Kaye is a Canadian author living in Toronto, Canada. She writes nonfiction and memoirs about her life experiences, matters of the heart, and self-help about women’s issues. Her positive outlook keeps D.G. on track, allowing her to take on life’s challenges with a dose of humor in her quest to overcome adversity.

D.G. began writing when pen and paper became the tools to express her pent-up emotions during her turbulent childhood. She began journaling about her life at a young age and continued writing about the imprints and lessons she learned through people and events she encountered. D.G. writes books to share her stories and inspiration. She advocates for kindness and for women’s empowerment. Her favorite saying is “For every kindness received, there should be kindness in return. Wouldn’t that just make the world right?”

When she’s not writing, D.G. loves to read (self-help books and stories of triumph), cook (concocting new recipes, never to come out the same way twice), shop (only if it’s a great sale), play poker (when she gets the chance), and, most of all, travel.

One of the reviews for Fifteen First Times

Pete Springer 5.0 out of 5 stars A Story of Familiar Firsts  Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 2, 2023

Fifteen First Times was such a comfortable and almost conversational read that I cranked it out in one setting. While a few of the memorable firsts involved topics that pertained more to women (period, menopause, shoes), there were plenty of other subjects that involved either gender. Written in her usual honest style with moments of sadness and humor embedded, Kaye will connect with most readers. While reading about a young woman finding her way, I found myself reminiscing about my first kiss, car, heartbreak, cigarette, and many other subjects.

Most subjects were pretty light until the author shared some poignant and touching memories about experiencing the death of a close friend and then, later, her husband. Those chapters will stay with me the most as Kaye openly shares her private thoughts. I felt like I was listening in on a phone call with someone sharing their feelings with a close friend.

How to feature in the series?

  • All I need you to do is give me permission to dive in to your archives and find two posts to share here on Smorgasbord. (sally.cronin@moyhill.com)
  • Rather than a set topic, I will select posts at random of general interest across a number of subjects from the second six months of 2022. (it is helpful if you have a link to your archives in your sidebar by month)
  • As I will be promoting your books as part of the post along with all your information and links so I will not be sharing direct marketing or self- promotional posts in the series.
  • If you are an author I am sure you will have a page on your blog with the details, and an ‘about page’ with your profile and social media links (always a good idea anyway). I will get everything that I need.
  • As a blogger I would assume that you have an ‘about page’ a profile photo and your links to social media.
  • Copyright is yours and I will ©Your name on every post… and you will be named as the author in the URL and subject line.
  • Previous participants are very welcome to take part again.
  • Each post is reformatted for my blog and I don’t cut and paste, this means it might look different from your own post especially if you are using the block editor
  • If I do share a post which contains mainly photographs I will share up to five and link back to the original post for people to view the rest.

N.B – To get the maximum benefit from your archive posts, the only thing I ask is that you respond to comments individually and share on your own social media.. thank you.

  1. I remember this post. Sometimes there doesn’t seem to be a good option no matter what one tries. Thankfully, I think everything has been OK since. Thanks, Sally and Debby.

  2. I remember this one from Debby. We’ve gone round and round with our cable company (bundling Internet, phone, and cable.) They’ll come out to fix one thing after a substantial waiting period, only to have something else go out right after they leave.

  3. Sally, thanks so much for sharing my rant, lol. And also, thank you so much for bringing Pete’s most beautiful review for my latest book. I am truly humbled Pete! Sometimes, the aggro can be worth it. Seems after leaving Rogers for Bell, then running back to Rogers, lessened by monthly bill by $60 with way more perks, lol. Hugs for sharing, and hugs to Pete. ❤

  4. I’m sorry, Debby! It does seem wrong to be so amused at someone’s trials and tribulations, but this is wonderfully done. I particularly liked “an installer minus a personality”! xx

  5. Oh my … Debby, i hope you’d recovered now. I always had thought the services in Germany are not existent. But your experiences show you can’t hide if the worst is knocking on your door. Take time to enjoy the new / old installations. Incidentally, I always have an old GSM stick for simple wireless internet connection in reserve. You never know what happens. I wish you a wonderful weekend! xx Michael

  6. Oh my goodness me! Rant away!
I’m having a terrible time with Facebook who are never there to talk to, never there to answer problems. Technology is a pain sometimes.
A phone that has decided to block my ‘Twitter’! (It didn’t help me dropping it down the toilet I know)
A laptop that goes on a nails pace and not every page (including wordpress – Sally) makes me sign in and accept cookies EVERYTIME. and even kicks off my first reply on Smorgesbord every day (So I now write and copy that one)
    I’m still battling with Facebook…
but think I might at least have my author page and bus page back.
    Rant!
I’m trying to stay calm but can feel the stress rising at times.
    Step away from the keyboard!!!!!
At least Alexander makes me do that. Thank goodness for grandson days!

(Baby Cotton-Tail is due any moment – that’s a little bit of light relief.)
