Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Weekly Round Up – May 1st – 7th 2023 – The Coronation, Family Photographs, Big Band Era, Guest Columns, Podcast, Book Reviews and Funnies

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have had a good week. We have enjoyed some sunshine but also some high winds which meant our blossom was short lived…

I am watching the Coronation in bursts on YouTube over the next couple of days. We don’t have television and only watch downloaded shows and films from Netflix or other streaming sites. I get my news from the various international papers I follow on a regular basis and to be honest I find that means I manage how much bad news I am exposed to on a daily basis.

Anyway back to the Coronation and currently the BBC coverage I am watching has racked up 4.4 million views since yesterday. I would imagine that would be mainly international by those who don’t have access to UK TV.   If you would like to watch the short highlights you can find them here Coronation Highlights the full length 7hrs 30 min BBC Coverage is Here.

Personally I am all for a monarchy as I feel it is a permanent and consistent reminder of our heritage and history which our revolving governments cannot provide. I know there are critics and certainly some members are not as contributory to the role as they might be and take advantage of their position. But, seeing the outpouring of support and joy at the processions and the events taking place, it is a much needed celebration after Covid and the loss of Her Majesty the Queen.

On the home front I have been working though probably a thousand or more photographs, cataloguing and filing so I know what we have. Some of the photos go back over 100 years and also includes a photo of one of my great-grandmothers on my mother’s side. Wonderful to revisit the family photos taken on our times overseas with my father but also our own travels in the last 43 years. Definitely a walk down memory lane and some possible inspirations for short stories in the future.

As always my thanks to my friends who contribute to the blog…

William Price King joined me this week for the Big Band Era with Benny Goodman, Larry Clinton and the Hokey Cokey…  On Friday William shared the first part of the series featuring Diana Krall.  You can also find William Blog– IMPROVISATIONWilliam Price King on Tumblr

Also food waste and how to make tasty chips using potato peelings in an air fryer. Also a wonderful recipe for Spicy red curry, Pork, Rice and Coconut Balls using up your cold cooked rice and an interesting use of egg shells and bananas to help your garden grow. In Thursday Thoughts the fascinating story of Lady Dai… a mummy who is in excellent condition despite her age and who might have been embalmed with a combination of ingredients that clearly have magical properties. 1. I’ve got a Pinterest board filled with old family photos going back 100-ish years. I treasure them, and they do spark ideas. I’m so glad you have similar family memories.

Thanks for including me among the many wonderful authors today.

  2. Thanks for another great week Sally.
I fully support your comments on the Coronation and the Royal family.
Indeed it is far better to have a royal family than some of the polititians and dictators.
My mum came to me to watch it on TV although she did complain that my TV was not very clear (no it wasn’t as clear as hers) but she appreciated being able to see it with someone. and to share her reminisences.
My daughter came along and joined in for the ‘crown on his head’ (as she put it).
I think Princess Anne was by far the most outstanding of the other Royals and I have the greatest respect for her. (She isn’t a ‘Spare’)
My mum had been posting photos of her dad decoration their house for previous coronations and celebrations. He was a royalist as are we.
My mum decorated her house to match her dads but was a bit disappointed that no one near to her followed suit.
I had my flags up (including my bus union Jack bunting) ready for my own Royal ‘grandson’ visitoron the Thursday.
we had our own a Kings celebration with marching and playing.
we sang Nannys Pussy Cat Song we had made up for the king. (He had my carnival book; the Queen had my Supersonic Book)
Didn’t see Alexander for the coronation but I’m sure he saw a bit of it.
We had a lovely family gathering with my sister and family (including my ‘grand-God Daughter’).

      • Indeed a day to remember.
(I’m glad to say that The Queen, Charles, William and Anne have all had one of my books – Harry too but he hasn’t sent a reply [yet or maybe too busy] Princess Anne’s bus was Sparky)
I love the way you can manage your neews.
sometimes there is just so much.
It was certainly good to have a celebration and good news for a change.
        Next week Eurovision?

  4. Lovely write up about the Coronation Sal. The pageantry was grand. Although, sorry, I’m in the Diana camp, as it seems many Canadians are too and not thrilled. I’d have loved to see another new tradition made and Charles hand the crown right to William and Kate. But I get it. I know William and Kate will reinforce the monarchy when they get there. That beautiful little Prince George has been and is being beautifully preened for his role as royalty. I miss Queen Elizabeth, she’s still my queen in spirit. 🙂
On another note, thanks for another wonderful week here Sal, and for having me part of it. ❤ ❤

    • Thanks Debby and as a fan of Princess Diana I do get it… they were ill fated and pushed into that marriage by those who should have known better. Diana deserved better abd she left us two young men who would have benfitted from her being there as they grew up. William will be a wonderful King I am sure and I believe there is a plan in place to hand the crown to him in 10 years time. And lovely to have you over as always Debby and thanks for all the support ♥♥

  7. In the U.S. MSNBC broadcast the Coronation in its entirety. I was happy to tune into the last couple of hours to see all the pomp and pageantry. Thanks for another week of great books, music, and information. (I limit almost all of my news now. It’s distressing with all the negativity). 💖

  8. I watched all the live coverage of the coronation on the BBC and my sister and cousin were watching the same live coverage in Australia so we could comment on our phones to each other! I also Facetimed my sister this morning so we could chat about it properly! I agree Sally and you have summed it up perfectly. It is all part of our history and heritage and we need a head of state above the seedy world of politics. It is good to have the best of everything to aspire to and yesterday had it all, our great armed forces, beautiful horses, music and lots of people interest.
