Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Weekly Round Up – 13th – 19th May 2024 – Cars, Music, Bulgarian Cuisine, Heart Health, Book Reviews, Bloggers

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have enjoyed a good week so far and the sun has been shining. We have had two or three glorious days and some more to come in the next few days. Bliss.

With my car fixed it was time to explore newer models and our own garage we have used for the last 8 years was very helpful in scouring the dealers for a good buy within out specifications. Combined with David’s efforts it was narrowed down to three cars all around the 3 to 5 years old. We headed north on Wednesday and I had a test drive in a 2021 Nissan Note which is one of the last petrol ones they made. Slightly different in as much as it is keyless entry and push button start, most of the other controls were very familiar. So after driving around the block we paid a deposit. A couple of bonuses, a three year warranty and delivery to the door which save us making the 100mile round trip to pick it up. All going well it will be here on Wednesday. I will certainly feel more confident in driving in the UK when I visit my family in the rescheduled trip in September.

David is going to have my car and sell his own Note as mine is an automatic and a better spec. So very successful week in that respect.  Time for some new adventures even if mine is not a Suburu….

I have also finished the editing of my WIP. Size Matters was first published first 2001 and I have updated and added a more detailed nutritional component and some recipes. It will be in ebook and print on Amazon, hopefully in a couple of months. Once this is off on its publishing journey… I will be working on another fantasy in the Tales from the Irish Garden due for release in the autumn.

So that is the news on the home front….

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – 22nd-28th April 2024 – Travel News, Hits 1970s, Iconic Duets, Funnies, Cardiovascular system, Book Review, Bloggers.

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

A glorious sunny day here and it will be with us for the start of the week anyway.. Once I have cleared the decks I shall be outside pottering in the garden and probably enjoying a book in my lounger.

I am busy at the moment getting ready for my trip next Sunday 5th May to see my sisters and brother. I am catching an early ferry across to the UK and then driving 250 miles to Portsmouth. I am hoping that unlike other trips during the week, being a Sunday there will be a lot less commercial traffic and roadworks which have extended the trip from four and half hours to over six. I drive back to Wales the following Sunday working on the same logic and catch the ferry home on the Monday.

I remember with fondness the days I would through some spare undies, a lipstick and my toothbrush in a case and head off into the unknown with anticipation. These days the planning involved is a little more extensive. Despite David being very self-sufficient I do like to leave him stocked up for food while I am away to save him having to shop, then there is the cat to consider and the birds who get fed every day… There are quite a few more lotions and other essentials to pack ‘just in case’ despite there being a multitude of shops the other side that stock them. Then the laptop needs to be backed up and chargers to be packed for various mobile devices.  Thank goodness I am not flying lol… I would probably not get through security.

The blog will be stocked up with the regulars while I am away and whilst I might not be on social media as much, I will be checking in and responding to comments. If you don’t see me for a day or two when I am travelling don’t worry ‘I’ll be Back’

Anyway…I am looking forward to seeing my family and they have a full agenda… plus I get to see my best friend and his wife too which is a bonus.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – February 5th-11th 2024 – Birthdays, Chart Hits 1960s, Iconic Duets, Cuisine Albania, Book Reviews, Bloggers, Heart Health, Humour

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you are all well… a quiet week here on the home front but this week it is time to start on clearing the pots ready for new plants in a couple of weeks. It has been a mild winter as we have had some roses, some of the geraniums kept going and even the hydrangeas produced a few blossoms which is unusual during winter.

I turn 71 on Tuesday and it only seems like a heartbeat since I was crossing into the 70s with some trepidation. Our physical progression is at odds with our mental and emotional state as apart from a little more grumpiness and shouting into the wind about world affairs (in my case) we change little.  I still feel very much alive, connected to the world and still dreaming of achieving more in coming years.

I do believe we are the first generation who are lucky enough to have access to the outside world through the Internet with blogging and social media than any generation before. When I look back at my mother and her friends when she was 70, they had retreated back from the world and the focus was on their immediate surroundings. They were considered old and treated as such, whereas today we are embracing growing older in a different way. We all know 80 and even 90 year olds in our writing community who have no intention of stepping back thank goodness and I hope that I am going to be one of them in coming years.

I haven’t changed at all lol…..

Anyway I have had an amazing life, travelled the world, had an amazing two careers, very different but energising, a wonderful husband and family, achieved many of my dreams, and I am privileged to be still part of an amazing online community with much to look forward to.

As always my thanks to my friends who contribute to the blog…

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – January 29th – February 4th 2024 – Signs of spring, Chart Hits 1960, Iconic Duets, Book Reviews, Health Focus 2024, Bloggers, Funnies

Welcome to the posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope wherever you are it has been a good week. Here mixed weather but signs spring is on its way… we have a patch of pansies that flower early at the beginning of February and they cheer me up no end.

I know from comments and emails that several of our writing community are suffering from recently diagnosed illness and facing tests and the long wait sometimes for results.

This means often that they have to put their blogging to one side, but I do hope they know that they have our support. Should you be facing a blogging break due to ill health then please let me know sally.cronin@moyhill.com or someone you are close to online, and if there is anything we can do during your time offline to promote your books or on social media, let us know.

Also we do get worried when someone we have regular contact with disappears from the online platforms and a small note if you can, on your blog to say you will be busy offline for a period of time, even without the details is reassuring.

The world is a huge place and the Internet is vast but even if we do not meet face to face, the friendships we have forged are just as important. I would hate anyone facing difficult challenges, particularly alone, to feel cut off from the community.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – January 22nd – 28th 2024 – Blogging Update for the year, 1960s Chart Hits, Iconic Duets, Antigua and Barbuda, Salt Licks, Bloggers, Book Reviews and Funnies..

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord..

Nothing much to report from this part of the world and I am not even going to mention the weather!

I have been busy however, planning out the year on the blog and my content in the various areas. The health column for example, for the first few months, is going to focus on cardiovascular disease since the statistics for most of our countries are getting worse by the year. It is now the global number one killer disease. Whilst most of the posts have been shared before, I will be updating with the latest statistics and putting them in a different order to cover the main areas that contribute to this disease, which I am pretty certain impacts most of our families, sometimes at a disturbingly young age.

I have just finished scheduling the first of the Posts from your Archive and thanks to the 20 participants so far.. that is 40 posts all set to go from January 31st… If you would like to participate here is a reminder of the introduction post from a few weeks ago. I am now scheduling from mid-March onwards so get back to me as soon as you can.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Weekly Round Up – 28th August – 3rd September 2023 – Big Band, U2, Mercury, Green Kitchen, Podcast, Book Reviews, Bloggers, Health and Humour

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have had a good week and have not been impacted by the storms in North America and other weather events. We had a good amount of rain but the last two days and today are bright and sunny and definitely time to get some garden jobs out of the way.

On the blog front this series has proved very popular which I am delighted about… it does mean that I am scheduling for end of October and early November. I have decided to extend the series so if you have been promoted here on Smorgasbord before, then please send an excerpt of 500 words (there is some leeway of course) to sally.cronin@moyhill.com.  Having been here before I will have all your other details and I always check for new bios etc when scheduling.

I have left some spaces for other promotions and it would be great if you would keep me updated on any new releases you have either on pre-order or available on Amazon.  This does not only apply to authors who have been previously promoted but to new authors too.

If you have not been promoted here before then I will need the Amazon link and I share both US and UK links. Goodreads, blog or website and social media. Please send the full URLs as I shorten them when I put the post together having checked them first. Please make sure your bio is current on Amazon and Goodreads and that you have a good quality profile photo. The only thing I ask of authors is that they respond to the comments individually when the promotion is posted and share on their own social media…otherwise it is free publicity and just takes a few minutes of your time. Please note that I don’t accept review copies as I prefer to buy the books I recommend and support authors in that way sally.cronin@moyhill.com

Always such a lovely reminder of why we write when readers take the time to share their feedback…My thanks to Yvette Calleiro who has written a lovely review for LIfe is Like a Mosaic… it gave me a boost to end the week.

Please head over to read Yvette’s review. Yvette’s review for Life is Like a Mosaic

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Weekly Round Up – 14th -20th August 2023 – Big Band Era, The Boss, Mushrooms, Gluten, Book Reviews, Book Excerpts, Bloggers, Humour

Welcome to the round up of posts that you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope wherever you are you have had a great week. We were graced with the presence of Storm Betty (I don’t know why they choose such benign names for such vicious visitations...)over the last two days with very high winds gusting at 130k per hour that knocked out power for many thousands people here in Ireland including us. The west coast, particularly Cork got it far worse with flooding devastating the county with streets in villages and towns awash with fast flowing water.

We were much luckier than many as we got the wind and rain but being rural the water was absorbed into the ground better. Our power went out at 3 a.m. according to the timings on equipment and we only got it back at 7 p.m. last night.

A day without internet is actually not dire, and as I schedule posts ahead the blog carried on as normal. We have two camping stoves as we have had a number of power outages of varying lengths over the last 7 years. Being rural with overhead cables and quite a few trees around, high winds play havoc.

I always have two or three days worth of batch cooked vegetables and rice in the fridge and so easy to reheat with a tin of tuna thrown in and to make cups of coffee and tea during the day. I caught up on reading and managed to get my usual walks in once the rain stopped and the winds died down a little.

We are back to normal but our hearts go out to those now trying to salvage homes that were inundated by the water.

Nancy Klein invited me to share a poem on her eclectic blog and I chose one from Life is Like a Mosaic. A lovely showcase, thank you Nancy.

Head over to the post: Life’s Progression Poem

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – 17th – 23rd July 2023 – Wild Gardens, Big Band Era, Opera, Vibes, Green Kitchen, Podcast, Book Reviews, Summer Book Fair, Bloggers, Health and Humour

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope your week has gone well we seem to have fallen foul of the curse of St. Swithin’s on July 15th when it poured all day and it has rained everyday since. Looking at the forecast for the next ten days that trend will continue in varying degrees with brief gaps… since if it rains on St. Swithin’s it will do so for 40 days… that means it will be 21st if August before summer returns… I will keep you updated.

However, in the garden everything is blooming, including the ‘wilded’ areas that David sowed with packets of a variety of wild flower seeds in the spring. Mainly in the back garden, and as I work or sit out there it is clear that the insects, including some wonderfully noisy bumble bees have been enjoying these small areas of natural planting. We also have a patch in the front outside our office window, which even on rainy days adds some colour.

The hydrangeas have also now come into full bloom and year after year they never disappoint… this year I have left the so called weeds that have also taken root in the pots as to be honest they have lovely flowers and attract the insects as much as the Hydrangeas do.

As always my thanks to my friends who contribute to the blog and where you can connect with them.

William Price King joined me this week for the Big Band Era with Jimmy Dorsey, Bing Crosby and The Nicholas Brothers. On Friday the next part of the American soprano Leontyne Price’s story . You can also find William Blog– IMPROVISATIONWilliam Price King on Tumblr. William will be offline for a few weeks for his usual summer break and unable to comment on the usual music posts but he well see them on his return and enjoy as always.

Debby Gies. Was here with her latest post in her Spiritual Awareness series on Monday Morning and this week ‘Vibes’…. She also her popular funnies in the laughter column. On her own blog you can find the link to the interview on Showboat TV with Judith Barrow which is very entertaining, also Debby’s Writer’s Tips for July from various expert sources and her Sunday Book Review today which is Living Without the One You Cannot Live Without by Natasha Josefowitz, Ph.D.   Head over toD.G. Kaye

Carol Taylor was be here on Wednesday with her next post in the Green Kitchen series including homemade crumpets and baking powder. Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have all had a good week and have enjoyed some of the sunnier weather we have. While David began to dismantle the kitchen to speed up the process of the installation of the new one this week, I sat in the garden and caught up with reading, music and sunshine… It certainly makes a difference. One of the neighbour’s cats came and kept me company all afternoon sitting in the shade of my chair and occasional commenting on the birds and the state of the world.

Here are some ‘before’ photos of the kitchen and hopefully next week you will get the ‘after’ ones!  All these units are being taken out and so it will take a two or three days to get the job done…Our office is in the diner part of the kitchen so we will be covering everything with sheets and decamping into the dining room. I will be offline during the day but will be checking in first thing and in the evening.

A wonderful surprise on Friday to find myself featured on author Stevie Turner’s blog along with the lovely review by Robbie Cheadle for Variety is the Spice of Life.. I hope you will head over to enjoy. Stevie Turner – Friday Showcase Sally Cronin

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Weekly Round Up – 27th March – 2nd April 2023 – Reviews, Contributor News, Big Band Era, Stevie Wonder, #Writersblock, #Foods ‘T’, Bloggers, Health, Podcast and Funnies

Welcome to the round up of posts that you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have enjoyed a good week and that you have been safe from the tornadoes in the US and other weather events. Dreadful to see the devastation and we are so lucky to only have to contend with such moderate mood swings in our own climate.

Nothing else to report on the home front as my packing continues with more boxes and bubble wrap arriving this week. We have scoped out a self storage complex close by and when we are ready to go on the market, the boxes and other items such as bikes etc will be put there so the house is as decluttered as possible.

A reminder to let me know if you have a new book out in the next few weeks so I can schedule a promotion…email me on sally.cronin@moyhill.com

I was out and about this week with a lovely review by Joan Hall on her blog in the great company of Marcia Meara, Priscilla Bettis, Harmony Kent, Gwen Plano and Tony Hillerman. Also on Harmony Kent’s blog where she shared her review for Variety is the Spice of Life a lovely end to the week.#BookReview: Variety is the Spice of Life – I would also like to thank Pete Springer for his wonderful review this week on Goodreads

As always my thanks to my friends who contribute to the blog…

William Price King joined me this week for the Big Band Era with Charlie Barnet, Glen Gray and the featured dance, The Quickstep. On Friday he continued the series on the music icon Stevie Wonder….You can also find William Blog– IMPROVISATIONWilliam Price King on Tumblr

Debby Gies was here on Monday with a post on Writer’s Block and with the funnies during the week. Tomorrow morning, Debby resumes her series about spiritual awareness exploring the reasons people appear in our lives. Having returned from her winter break last week you can find posts on some of her adventures on getting to Mexico and meeting new friends, her March writing links and her book review for Cheryl Oreglia. Follow the link to Debby’s blog to browse her archives D.G. Kaye

Carol Taylor was here on Wednesday with her A-Z of food and the letter ‘T’. On her own blog you can find  to catch up on this and all of Carol’s posts this week on Monday Musings a fascinating link to a post by Pete Johnson on vending machines in the early 20th century forward and the amazing things they sold, and thoughts on last week’s hour change, do we need it? On Thursday thoughts some important issues raised… trees and their protection, the young and their protection against the often violent content across the media they are exposed to and an antidote in the form of music. Head over to read this post and the other’s this week Carol Taylor’s Thursday Thoughts
