Smorgasbord Weekly Round Up – 26th September – October 2nd 2022 – Hits 2004, Bocelli, Culinary ‘H’ foods, Basking Sharks, Podcast, Reviews, Health and Humour

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed during the week here on Smorgasbord.

I know this week has been very difficult for many of you living in the US and in the path of the hurricane weather. I do hope that you are safe and that you didn’t suffer any damage to your homes. You have been in our thoughts.

Nothing much to report on the home front as we carry on getting the small jobs in the house completed and get the garden ready for the autumn. We are keeping an eye on the house selling market and if necessary we may hold off until the spring. Once you get into November and Christmas (sorry to use that word so early) house sales do tail off. We are not in a rush and may well wait until spring when it picks up again. However, at least we will be ready should the opportunity present itself and we will keep an open mind.

Welcome to the posts from the week here on Smorgasbord that you might have missed.

Not a great deal to report this week on the home front. We have some areas that we think would benefit from some more work and that is okay. To be honest if we slip to the end of October we might consider waiting until the spring as a more appropriate time to sell. We are in no rush and the garden would look better then too. We shall see what happens. In the meantime plenty to be getting on with.

The weather is definitely on the turn but still some nice days and I have quite a bit of online work to catch up on anyway.

I am going to be working on my own WIP or two over the next few weeks as well as things around the house, so I have scheduled ahead. I will be in and out obviously to catch up with comments and your blogs.

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope that despite Mercury Retrograted (thanks Debby for the head’s up) you have had a good week.

Of course the news has been dominated by the sad death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. It is incredible to see the outpouring of love and respect for this unwaveringly dedicated monarch around the world and there have been tears as both young and old feel the loss of her presence in our lives.

Image Wikipedia

I was christened during Coronation week in June 1953 and she has been Queen my entire life. Being from a service family her portrait adorned every establishment and was celebrated at every occasion instilling a fascination and respect for the monarchy from a very early age. During her reign she united us during times of crisis and also during times of jubilation both at home and throughout the Commonwealth.

How wonderful that she was able to take part in the Jubilee this year and I know that her tea party with Paddington Bear will be remembered by millions for years to come.

There are some who wonder what the next few years will bring with King Charles III on the throne. My feeling is that he has had an amazing teacher and role model and also wishes to leave the monarchy as a strong institution for Prince William to take the reins eventually.

There are many wonderful videos on The Royal Family channel and here is are reminder of that tea party and an amazing sense of humour. The Royal Family RIP Your Majesty and thank you.

In the midst of the mourning for the Queen, it is also a day of remembrance for those who lost their lives on September 11th 2001. A day that rocked the world and left its scars on thousands who lost loved ones. Our thoughts are with them today.

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope the week going well so far for you. Nothing much to report on the home front as we continue to do our tidy up to sell.. it is the small fiddly jobs that seem to take the longest.

I continue with the online shopping for both location and properties that tick the boxes for what we hope is our last move. Whilst we are still hale and hearty, there may come a time in years ahead when we cannot drive and whilst we love being in a more rural environment, if there is no public transport close to hand it makes life a little more difficult. Also we are 40 minutes away from the nearest emergency department. Touch wood that has not been an issue and we do have a very good out of hours clinic. But I do think there would be some comfort in knowing you are not too far from emergency help should you need it.

Of course as the media is keen to point out in the UK, the wait for an ambulance in some areas is the issue not the distance. Being close to an ER certainly offers some options in many circumstances with taxis being one of them.

If you have to give up your car it is also good to have a decent size supermarket close by and again you can get taxis and to be honest with the cost of insurance, petrol, servicing and other car expenses you can get an awful lot of taxis in a year for a lot less.

Anyway, I have expanded our search to along the south coast of Ireland but we are not dismissing a return to the UK.

Stay tuned lol for the adventures to come.

As always my thanks to my friends who take time to share their expertise with us….

This week William Price King joined me for The Breakfast Show and shared the first in the classical music genre with the life and music of the great Pavarotti. Welcome to the round up of posts you may have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope you have had a great week.. The sun has been shining most days and this has meant that the last of the outside jobs on the house are well underway. Water has been a great attraction for the birds who already enjoy their outsize bathing trays that can hold a flock of starlings at one time. If there is a crow investigating ways to get into the bird feed pyramid we have built they seem to perform a synchronised Haka facing the intruder from the safety of the pool. Very entertaining and effective.

Charlie the crow is exempt from this behaviour and I do think they sense that his permanent disability of being unable to open his beak very wide makes him a non-threat. I had some double cream that had gone sour… and I know a certain someone who is very partial to a bit of dairy for some reason. I managed to catch Charlie in the act as he polished off the small tub ending up with the evidence all over his face.

Anyway they do provide plenty of entertainment through the kitchen window or if I am sitting in the sunshine. Apparently I am not a threat either and they chatter incessantly amongst themselves about the standard of the food and facilities… thank goodness they cannot access Tripadvisor.

As always my thanks to William Price King, currently on his summer break for the Breakfast Show and the life of Nina Simone. You can also find William Blog– IMPROVISATIONWilliam Price King on Tumblr

Welcome to the round up of post this week you might have missed on Smorgasbord.

I hope that you have had a good week.  I know some of you are on holiday either at home or abroad and enjoying different surroundings. Hopefully not too long in the airport and reunited with your luggage. The UK is definitely in a mess in that regard and the strikes don’t help. Whilst it certainly gets the attention of the media, it seems that the only people who suffer are those ordinary citizens trying to get to work or take their families on well earned breaks. I am all for fair wages for a days work, but when a train driver is earning almost three times more than a nurse and considerably more than a fireman, it does seem a little aggresive. Whilst the leadership of the UK is in flux I suppose it is seen as an opportunity to cause as much chaos as possible.

On the home front, rain has caused a stoppage of work for the main contractor. To be honest he has painted three quarters of the outside of the house including all the window surrounds and corner stones in white and it looks amazing. I am quite happy that he has to take a break from climbing ladders after 12 days solid. There are some inside jobs that need attention so you can rest assured he won’t be wasting any time!

Thanks to my friends William Price King and Debby Gies for their music and humour contributions this week and you can find out more about them on their own sites. .

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed on Smorgasbord this week.

I hope those of you who were suffering from the heat wave and added risks of wildfires are now finding things much cooler. We are back to our seasonal temperatures and have had some welcome rain the last couple of days which is good news for the farmers. They have worked overtime in the last two weeks to get their fields mown and baled but they need a new growth now for stock for the rest of the summer.

The outside of the house is looking great with its new coat of grey and white paint with just the back of the house needing another coat.

I am spending August on some work related projects for the autumn.. a new short story collection, poetry collection and for early next year an updated and Ebook version of my family health manual Just Food For Health, which at 360 pages in the print version is going to take a bit of time.  I have stocked the blog and whilst not around quite as much on social media business will carry on as usual.

Thanks to my friends William Price King and Debby Gies for their music and humour contributions this week and you can find out more about them on their own sites. .

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Weekly Round Up – July 11th – 17th – Hits 1999, Nina Simone, Ireland 1930s, Book Reviews, Summer Book Fair, Poetry, Podcast, Health and Humour

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

It seems that summer is here with a vengeance and for some on the continent it has brought the dreaded wildfires that put not just people but wildlife at great risk. We count our blessings that we have cloud cover much of the time and we are unlikely to get over 24 degrees. With onshore breezes it does help to keep the heat down. Those of us of a certain age still remember the summer of 1976 when the heatwave went on for several weeks. It looks like this one will be shorter lived and hopefully for those experiencing the severe temperatures and risk of fires will get rain soon.

Work on the house continues and the outside walls are getting the attention at the moment and another couple of weeks and it will be time to look at each room and arrange and dress ready for inspection. I am looking at property sites at the moment in the area that we would like to move to on the south coast and one house I was checking out was dressed immaculately throughout. Clearly the estate agent thought that two very large multi packs of toilet rolls set off the master bedroom ensuite perfectly or perhaps thought they might be a selling point!

Anyway… keep cool and safe.

On the blog front…

On the blog front.. the new series of ‘Posts from Your Archives’ begins in August. With your permission I will browse your posts between January and the end of June 2022 and select two to share in a post on Smorgasbord. Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – June 27th – July 3rd 2022 – Chart Hits 1998, Roberta Flack, Podcast Story, #Waterford 1930s, Reviews, Guest Posts, Health and Humour

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed on Smorgasbord this week.

As well as decluttering in the house this week I have also been working through my posts and files, updating and cleaning up links.. I found a promotional video that I thought I would dust off and share on social media again.. the view has changed but the invitation is the same.

Other than that it has been a quiet week getting on with the house redecorating (my role at this point is purely supervisory lol) I just make sure the working half of the partnership is fed and watered on a regular basis.. strawberries seem to be a great motivator..

I did have a mishap this week and clearly whilst I am more than happy to lay the blame at the feet of WordPress, it is more likely I hit the wrong button. A post I was working on published and whilst I was able to delete from the automatic postings to social media of course an email notification was sent to thousands!

I have now inserted a fail safe and schedule the post for the correct date before I format. That way if anything goes wrong it won’t hit the airwaves.

I did send a notification out to all those who receive then to apologise and hope you will pop in on the 16th to read the finished post.. a heartwarming I Wish I Knew Then by Hugh Roberts.

Thanks to my friends William Price King and Debby Gies for their music and humour contributions this week and you can find out more about them on their own sites. .

William Price King joined me on The Breakfast show this week for the second part of the hits from 1997 and for the third part of the series about Roberta Flack. You can also find William – Blog– IMPROVISATION– William Price King on Tumblr

Over on her blog you can you can catch up with her posts including her book review for Ending Forever by Nicholas Conley, a social media rant and a surprise and an exploration of epistolary writing..
