Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed during the week here on Smorgasbord.

A very wet and windy day which we are not unhappy about as we have had no rain for what seems a record 9 days!  Well there were a couple of quick showers which meant I didn’t have to water the pot plants on a couple of days but they don’t count!  I did get some quality sun and reading times in the back garden however and reviews to follow in coming weeks.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – 13th – 19th June 2022 – Lilies, Top hits 1997, Roberta Flack, Podcast, Poetry, Reviews, New Releases, Health and Humour

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope that you are doing okay wherever you live. I know that certain countries in Europe and here in Ireland are experiencing an increase in Covid cases, but it seems that most people are unconcerned and have ditched their masks. Thankfully here it is a matter of choice and with us both having had Covid and not wishing to have again, I will be sticking with the mask for some time to come.

The work on the house continues, but most of the decluttering is now finished with the product of this exercise being collected on Monday. I spent some time in the garden repotting, deadheading and moving plants from front to back as they blossom. This includes one of my favourites. These lilies bloom for a few weeks only.  During the winter I stack the containers containing the bulbs at the back of the house in a corner and cover. In April I set them out in the daylight and water them and here we are in the middle of June and they offer their wonderful blossoms again.  They shout summer.

As always my thanks to my friends who share their expertise and fun with us each week.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – May 23rd -29th – Crows, Aretha Franklin, Chart Hits 1995, Curacao, Manganese, stories, reviews, health and humour

Welcome to the round up of posts on Smorgasbord that you might have missed this week.

I hope you are well and had a good week. It has been busy here as we continue the redecoration but the dining room is now completed and we will be moving all the furniture back in over the next couple of days. I will share some pictures next week of the before and after. Because of the comings and goings this week I did not have a chance to do the podcast but Tales from the Irish Garden will be back again next Sunday.  Instead a short story that I wrote recently as one of the new collection slowly being written and hopefully out later in the year.. It did appear earlier in the year on Allan Hudson’s blog.

Charlie Update

In the spring we rescued a crow who had probably been injured by a car and was unable to open his beak very far and appeared to have some brain damage. Whilst there might have been an option to put him to sleep humanely, we decided to see if we could rehabilitate him.  For six weeks he lived in a hutch David built and I hand fed him pureed chicken for the first few days which was messy but he seemed to get the idea. He then was able to move his beak sideways and moved on to bread and butter, tuna, enriched fat balls and other soft foods. He couldn’t fly and would fall over if he tried to walk but this too improved over the weeks until he began to flutter short distances.

He got used to drinking from the bird bath on the ground and even copied the starlings who use it as a bath several times a day.

Here he is enjoying his bread and butter

Eventually he was able to fly further and and seemed to regain his balance. He would sit and look up at the sky watching the many crows who fly around us from the neighbouring woods and he would try to launch himself up to join them. Eventually one day, he did and we didn’t see him for about a week, fearing the worst.

However, he did return and we know it is him because he still is unable to eat normally so uses the sideways movement to grasp bird seed and demolish his favourite fat balls. He loves Basmati cooked rice too. He is much smaller than the other crows and he is still a bit of a loner as I guess being disabled he may not be as accepted by the others, but we notice he is in the company of a larger crow much of the time which is great.

He knows when I put out the breakfast for the birds and is always first on the scene and when I shoo off the other crows he stays and gets on with eating but he looks over as if to say.. ‘you don’t scare me missus’.  He still enjoys the bird bath to wash down his food.

As always a thank you to the amazing contributors who share their expertise and entertain us every week.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – May 2nd – 8th 2022 – Voice of Indie, Hits 1994, Ella Fitzgerald, Guest Posts, Short Stories, Poetry, Health and Humour

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

A slightly different location for this week’s round up as I am set up in the kitchen whilst our office (that is the official dining room) is given a full makeover. Because we set up our computers in there six years ago it has not been decorated as part of the renovation so a big job ahead for David. We plan to move all our dining room furniture in there and make the kitchen diner our office going forward, as we think it is important when the house goes on the market there is another fully functional reception room. So we are making progress and another job ticked off the list…

There are boxes everywhere, some already packed up to be taken away as we declutter and the next few weeks will be a bit chaotic, but it is exciting to be getting on with something we planned to do before Covid.

Apart from that, we now have a few sunny days and I am taking full advantage of the garden. Sitting in the back of the house I am treated to a revue show put on by the crows, starlings, blue tits, sparrows and the resident robin as they enjoy breakfast, lunch and high tea before they go to bed. There is a large swimming pool that is well utilised, and whilst the starlings love to get in there and splash around, the other birds often join in and it is as wild as any pool party I have ever gone to. Very entertaining and distracting, and if I sit quite still, they forget I’m there and get up close and personal.

As always I must thank these three amazing contributors as the blog would not be the same without them.

Welcome to the round up of posts on Smorgasbord this week you might have missed.

I hope all is well with you and in your neck of the woods.. Still busy in the house and garden and all the potting done now the frosts seem to have finished. This week I get moved out into the dining room as David gives our office a facelift… Luckily he has networked through the house so it does not cause too much of an upheaval.

We are still having issues with the Internet, and it is not giving us the speeds it should and dropped out completely at the beginning of the week. Because I schedule well ahead the posts are not impacted but fingers crossed it behaves better this coming week.

I have been invited to join the hosts Beem Weeks and Stephen Geez on Wednesday on the popular Voice of Indie Podcast and I am looking forward to meeting them both.

As always I must thank these three amazing contributors as the blog would not be the same without them.

Welcome to the round up of posts on Smorgasbord that you might have missed during the week…

I hope you have had a good week and thanks for dropping in here today for the catch up. On the home front decorating has gone well with David finishing the utility room which now looks very bright and cheerful with bright yellow walls and glossy white woodwork…next job is our joint office and I will be decamping to the dining room for a couple of weeks with my desktop so there will be no break in service (hopefully).

Outside I managed to get half the pot planting done before high winds blew in and delayed the other half until tomorrow. Still it is beginning to look bright and cheerful out there too.

I did capture the blossom on the tree that has appeared this week before it gets blown away…

Lots to be grateful for, including these three amazing contributors.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine – Weekly Round Up – 4th – 10th April 2022 – Hits 1992, Dionne Warwick, Legacy, Movie memories, Book Reviews, Health and Humour

Welcome to the round up of posts this week on Smorgasbord that you might have missed.

A varied week on the weather front here with bright sunshine one minute and heavy thunderstorms and hail the next. We are hoping that this week will see the last of the frosts and Easter weekend will be bright and sunny.

As always the news is as varied, and apart from anything else I am extremely grateful and privileged to live in a country with so many freedoms. Ireland has suffered in the past with independence coming at a very high price in terms of lives and following the devastating famine. But that was a century ago and today it is a thriving nation who has opened its doors to refugees without question.

I don’t understand how in this modern world of global communications, space travel and amazing medical advances, some individuals behave in such a medieval horrendous fashion. What is constant, is the bravery and determination of those subjected to tyranny, in standing up against it, on both sides of the conflict. Let’s hope this week there will be some more postive steps to a resolution.

News on the blog front and a new series begins next week

I am sure like me, there have been times when you have wondered what difference might have been made to your life, if your younger self had been gifted with the experience and knowledge you have accumulated over the years.

I invited several friends from the writing community to share their thoughts on this subject which I am sure you will enjoy as much as I did. The first guest post is by John Howell on Wednesday, and the rest of the series will be airing over the next few months.

Do you have a new book available or on pre-order in the next few weeks?

Please let me have the Amazon link and I will do the usual new book on the shelves promotion. If you have not seen one of the promotional posts for a new book before, here is a recent example which has received over 160 views since 4th April and multiple shares on Twitter.

New Book on the Shelves – #Romance – Between The Vines (Keystone Couples) by Staci Troilo

Please make sure your Amazon and Goodreads bios are up to date and if you have not been featured before on Smorgasbord, please add your blog/website, Twitter, Facebook in your email. Send to sally.cronin@moyhill.com and I will let you know if I need anything else.

My thanks to William Price King for joining me on The Breakfast show this week and for the final part of the Dionne Warwick story. Next week a new series for Friday featuring Ella Fitzgerald.

Debby Gies is back from Mexico and shared her travel adventure (nightmare) that is flying back and forth from destinations with chaotic airport managment and conflicting restrictions.. However, she also shares some of the highlights of her two months in between flights that made the whole trip worth it in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

I’m back from Puerto Vallarta…

This week marked a year since the sad loss of her husband ‘G’ and in a poignant post Debby shares a tribute to her soul mate… you can read that on her blog along with this week’s book review D.G. Writes

Debby is here on Monday with some Caribbean sunshine on St. Martin in The Travel Column.
