Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Update – August 15th – 21st 2022 – Chart hits 2001, #Pavarotti, #Food, #Waterford 1940s, Podcast, Weight Loss, Stories, Reviews, Health and Humour

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

I hope the week going well so far for you. Nothing much to report on the home front as we continue to do our tidy up to sell.. it is the small fiddly jobs that seem to take the longest.

I continue with the online shopping for both location and properties that tick the boxes for what we hope is our last move. Whilst we are still hale and hearty, there may come a time in years ahead when we cannot drive and whilst we love being in a more rural environment, if there is no public transport close to hand it makes life a little more difficult. Also we are 40 minutes away from the nearest emergency department. Touch wood that has not been an issue and we do have a very good out of hours clinic. But I do think there would be some comfort in knowing you are not too far from emergency help should you need it.

Of course as the media is keen to point out in the UK, the wait for an ambulance in some areas is the issue not the distance. Being close to an ER certainly offers some options in many circumstances with taxis being one of them.

If you have to give up your car it is also good to have a decent size supermarket close by and again you can get taxis and to be honest with the cost of insurance, petrol, servicing and other car expenses you can get an awful lot of taxis in a year for a lot less.

Anyway, I have expanded our search to along the south coast of Ireland but we are not dismissing a return to the UK.

Stay tuned lol for the adventures to come.

As always my thanks to my friends who take time to share their expertise with us….

This week William Price King joined me for The Breakfast Show and shared the first in the classical music genre with the life and music of the great Pavarotti. Music I grew up with and looking forward to sharing some more great music with you.

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed on Smorgasbord this week.

I hope those of you who were suffering from the heat wave and added risks of wildfires are now finding things much cooler. We are back to our seasonal temperatures and have had some welcome rain the last couple of days which is good news for the farmers. They have worked overtime in the last two weeks to get their fields mown and baled but they need a new growth now for stock for the rest of the summer.

The outside of the house is looking great with its new coat of grey and white paint with just the back of the house needing another coat.

I am spending August on some work related projects for the autumn.. a new short story collection, poetry collection and for early next year an updated and Ebook version of my family health manual Just Food For Health, which at 360 pages in the print version is going to take a bit of time.  I have stocked the blog and whilst not around quite as much on social media business will carry on as usual.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – May 23rd -29th – Crows, Aretha Franklin, Chart Hits 1995, Curacao, Manganese, stories, reviews, health and humour

Welcome to the round up of posts on Smorgasbord that you might have missed this week.

I hope you are well and had a good week. It has been busy here as we continue the redecoration but the dining room is now completed and we will be moving all the furniture back in over the next couple of days. I will share some pictures next week of the before and after. Because of the comings and goings this week I did not have a chance to do the podcast but Tales from the Irish Garden will be back again next Sunday.  Instead a short story that I wrote recently as one of the new collection slowly being written and hopefully out later in the year.. It did appear earlier in the year on Allan Hudson’s blog.

Charlie Update

In the spring we rescued a crow who had probably been injured by a car and was unable to open his beak very far and appeared to have some brain damage. Whilst there might have been an option to put him to sleep humanely, we decided to see if we could rehabilitate him.  For six weeks he lived in a hutch David built and I hand fed him pureed chicken for the first few days which was messy but he seemed to get the idea. He then was able to move his beak sideways and moved on to bread and butter, tuna, enriched fat balls and other soft foods. He couldn’t fly and would fall over if he tried to walk but this too improved over the weeks until he began to flutter short distances.

He got used to drinking from the bird bath on the ground and even copied the starlings who use it as a bath several times a day.

Here he is enjoying his bread and butter

Eventually he was able to fly further and and seemed to regain his balance. He would sit and look up at the sky watching the many crows who fly around us from the neighbouring woods and he would try to launch himself up to join them. Eventually one day, he did and we didn’t see him for about a week, fearing the worst.

However, he did return and we know it is him because he still is unable to eat normally so uses the sideways movement to grasp bird seed and demolish his favourite fat balls. He loves Basmati cooked rice too. He is much smaller than the other crows and he is still a bit of a loner as I guess being disabled he may not be as accepted by the others, but we notice he is in the company of a larger crow much of the time which is great.

He knows when I put out the breakfast for the birds and is always first on the scene and when I shoo off the other crows he stays and gets on with eating but he looks over as if to say.. ‘you don’t scare me missus’.  He still enjoys the bird bath to wash down his food.

As always a thank you to the amazing contributors who share their expertise and entertain us every week.

Welcome to the round up of posts on Smorgasbord that you might have missed during the week…

I hope you have had a good week and thanks for dropping in here today for the catch up. On the home front decorating has gone well with David finishing the utility room which now looks very bright and cheerful with bright yellow walls and glossy white woodwork…next job is our joint office and I will be decamping to the dining room for a couple of weeks with my desktop so there will be no break in service (hopefully).

Outside I managed to get half the pot planting done before high winds blew in and delayed the other half until tomorrow. Still it is beginning to look bright and cheerful out there too.

I did capture the blossom on the tree that has appeared this week before it gets blown away…

Lots to be grateful for, including these three amazing contributors.

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine Weekly Round Up – 11th – 17th April 2022 – Twitter fakes, Hits 1992, Ella Fitzgerald, #Caribbean, Vitamin C, Stories, Poetry, Reviews, Health and Funnies

Welcome to the round up of posts you might have missed this week on Smorgasbord.

It seems that winter is dragging on for many this week including places that hve been seeing some unseasonal cold weather and frosts such as South America, with some crops at risk at this critical stage in their growth. By this time I usually have my planters full of flowers but last week we had several severe frosts but hopeful it will be warmer this week. Apart from the colour in the garden.. the exercise would be welcome, especially after we shared a box of luxury chocolates for Easter instead of eggs… a little of what you fancy does you good!!.

On another note. This week someone decided to use my name and photograph and open an account on Twitter. One of my contacts alerted me to it early in the week as they had been approached but she saw it was a different twitter tag although it was my name and picture. Also there was no profile to indicate who and what this person was nor where there any tweets made.

I reported and blocked them. This is important as they are usually after your connections and all they have to do is click on Followers in a profile and then keep clicking the follow button without much limitation.

Many people follow back automatically when a notification appears in their timeline without heading over to check who it is they are following. This means that this fake person can end up with potentially thousands of followers who they can then target for one purpose or another. For example book promotion sites who claim to have 250,000 connections and ask for £50 a promotion!  Or it may be direct messages promoting their goods or even asking donations for a charity etc.

Anyway.. my twitter is @sgc58… and it is Sally Georgina Cronin

They are using twitter.com/germaine_ellen  and it is a good idea to block them to stop them mining your followers and if you feel like reporting them then that is a good idea too.

I did report to twitter and told them they were impersonating me but they wanted me to upload my passport or driving licence to prove who I was. I am not doing that as most social media sites as as leaky as my kitchen colander.

It is best to check before following back anyone.. if they are genuine they will have at least some form of profile to indicate who and what they are and they have tweeted.

There is always something to be grateful for, including these three amazing contributors.

My thanks to William Price King for joining me on The Breakfast show this week and for the first part of the new series for Friday featuring Ella Fitzgerald.  – You can also find William – Blog– IMPROVISATION– William Price King on Tumblr
